Year in Review.
First Year
My freshman year at the University of Cincinnati was a crazy one to say the least. There were so many ups and downs to this year, but I could not have asked for a better first year of college. For my year-in-review, I have decided to write about the top 5 moments that truly defined my freshman year. I came into freshman year a completely different person that I am today because of these 5 moments:
1. I realized just how much I love and appreciate my family. My family and I went to the Ohio State versus the University of Cincinnati football on September 27th. After the game, my dad was sitting in the car in traffic and had sudden cardiac death. There were medical professionals in the parking lot where the car was and they were able to start CPR on him. Then the police were able to come over and shock him back to life with an AED machine. My dad spent two weeks at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio where he was in a hypothermic coma, had open heart surgery, and much more. That was a very trying time for my family, but we definitely grew closer to each other and closer in our faith. My dad is now doing great and feels better than ever. I am so thankful for my family and friends that showed us so much support during the scary time.
2. Joining a sorority was everything I imagined and more. Yes, I went through the infamous sorority recruitment during the first two weekends of September. I did not see myself as the typical “sorority girl,” but joining Kappa Alpha Theta was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have met some of my best friends through Theta, and my sisters inspire me to be a better version of myself. We received the highest grades out of all of UC Greek Life during the 2014 fall semester and we received the highest award of Overall Premiere Chapter at the Greek Excellence Awards. I have decided to live in the Theta house next school year, so I am excited for that opportunity to grow closer to my sisters.
3. I realized that high school will not last forever. I went home Christmas break with the intentions of hanging out with all my high school friends, but I was sadly hit with the reality that high school does not last forever. I have stayed close with a few friends from my high school, but I realized that staying in touch with everybody from high school is not possible. Although I was mistaken, I now appreciate the friendships that I did keep. Going to college made me realize who my true friends are, and I am very grateful for that.
4. Nursing school is just as hard as everybody says it is. I went into my first year in UC’s college of nursing expecting it to be difficult, but I did not expect to have to work as hard as I did. I spent countless nights studying for anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and much more. Working hard definitely paid off though because I made the Dean’s List for both semesters of my freshman year. The next 3 years in the college of nursing will be difficult, but I am excited to finally be able to go into the hospitals for clinicals and learn the true art of nursing.
5. The University of Cincinnati is perfect, and I cannot wait for 3 more years. I remember walking down Main Street on a Friday afternoon during football season and hearing the band playing and cheering Cheer Cincinnati. At that moment I remember thinking that I truly was in love with my school. I came to the university in August of 2014 and cried because I was nervous about leaving home and everything that was coming up in the next few months. However, I cried in April of 2015 leaving the university to go home for the summer because I was going to miss the place that I was now able to call home.

Second Year
I cannot believe that I am already half way through my college career. Time has flown by; I guess time actually flies when you are having fun! For my year in review for my sophomore year, I decided to make a video. The video explains everything that happened during my sophomore year, and it has a slideshow of pictures from the year to one of my favorite songs.
THIRD Year
WOW!!! (AKA the only thing I can think when somebody tells me I only have one more year left at the University of Cincinnati). My third year was great because I was able to take classes I enjoyed, have a job that I love, and have so much fun! For my third year year-in-review, I decided to make a picture that describes the major events that happened during my junior year. Below you can find the picture, and the explanation for everything in the picture!
Scrubs, Stethoscope, and Children’s Hospital PCA Badge: Over the summer, I accepted a PCA job at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on the hematology/ oncology unit. PCA stands for patient care assistant. Basically, I am an assistant to the nurses, and I am able to perform delegated tasks such as getting I’s and O’s, getting weights, giving baths, changing linens, taking vital signs, collecting UAs, and the list goes on. This was a great way for be to gain experience working in a hospital before graduating and becoming a nurse. I wanted to work on hematology/ oncology specifically because that was the unit I volunteered on. I grew to know and love the patients, families, and staff on the unit, so the transition from being a volunteer to a PCA was easy.
Coffee Mug: I worked about 20 hours a week as a PCA, so my job and class schedule took up a good majority of my time this year. In fact I was so busy that I was not able to make it to a single UC football game this year which I was really bummed about. Some days the only thing that kept me going on a few hours of sleep was coffee.
Glasses: I got glasses in September! I did not realize how much I could not see!
Theta House: I decided to live in my sorority house for the second year in a row; however living in the house was not as convenient as last year because this year I was a Rho Gamma.
KAO Crossed Out: As a Rho Gamma, I disaffiliate from my sorority and counsel a group of potential new members- or PNMs- through the formal recruitment process in the fall semester. Being a Rho Gamma was a huge time commitment over the summer due to meetings, retreats, and training sessions. However, all the time and effort was worth it when I handed my PNMs their bids to their new sororities. Two of the girls from my Rho Gamma group joined my sorority, so it was fun to be able to run back to the house with some of the girls I had mentored through recruitment. Here is a link to the video showing some part of our 2016 bid day!
Sun: I got an email at work one day that said Sunshine Committee needed new members, so I thought I would apply to be on my unit’s Sunshine Committee. Sunshine Committee is a group of nurses, PCAs, HUCs, and other staff who work on the hematology/ oncology unit that plan fun events for all the staff to attend. We planned Secret Santa, dinner club, March Madness brackets, a wine and paint night, and much more. I loved being on Sunshine Committee and getting to plan fun event to do with my co workers. I work with some really great people, and it was nice to get a break from work and have fun with them.
I Love NY Pin: On a spur of the moment decision, my friend Emily and I decided that we were going to visit New York City on fall break. Neither of us had to work that weekend (which was surprising), so we decided to go visit The Big Apple. I had never been to New York City before, so I was really excited to see the famous city in real life. We had a blast visiting Carlo’s Bakery, the Empire State building, Times Square, and West Point. We even rode the train into the city from New Jersey, so we felt like New Yorkers.
Tree: Next I added to my sorority family by getting another little. I added my second little, Kelly, to the family, and then my first little, Maddie, got a little. So next I added my grand little, Izzy, to the family. It gets confusing, I know. My grand little, Izzy, was actually one of the two girls that came to my chapter from my Rho Gamma group.
Love Your Melon Hat: Next is a funny story. Over the summer, I applied to start a Love Your Melon campus crew at the University of Cincinnati. However, I did not realize that we already had a crew! So I actually joined the crew that we already have established as a volunteer. As I attended more meetings and volunteered for more events, I was able to become a UC LYM campus crew member. With Love Your Melon so far, I have been able to help donate hats to kids battling pediatric cancer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, make cards for kids battling cancer across America, host a Be the Match event that helped people sign up to be bone marrow donors, and overall spread the awareness of how awesome Love Your Melon is! If you have not already heard of Love Your Melon, you should check out their website at www.loveyourmelon.com and see all the wonderful things they are doing for pediatric cancer patients across America.
I Love Telemetry Coffee Mug: Onto classes- the real reason I am at the University of Cincinnati. During the fall semester, I was at Bethesda North Hospital on a telemetry unit for my med- surgical clinical rotation. The reason the mug says, “I Love Telemetry,” is because telemetry is floor that has to do with monitoring patient’s hearts- it’s funny!
Backpack: The fall semester was when I earned my highest GPA among my time at UC, and I learned a lot about taking care of adult patients, nursing research, and community nursing during this semester.
Peds/ OB Nursing Textbook: During the spring semester, I was able to take two nursing classes that I loved so much and have been some of my favorite classes ever. This was pediatric nursing and OB nursing. For the first half of the spring semester, I was at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for my peds clinical rotation on the cardiac step down unit. This clinical solidified my love for peds nursing, and I know that is definitely what I want to go into. For the second half of the semester, I was doing my OB clinical rotation at University Hospital on the labor and delivery floor. This was a super exciting clinical, and I learned a ton. Even though this semester required a lot of studying, I truly loved what I was studying so it made all the hours go by quickly.
Ecuador and BMT Co- Op Sign: My year finished off strong because I accepted a co- op position at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on the bone marrow transplant unit on the same day that I accepted the Ecuador community clinical trip. Needless to say, I did a lot of celebrating that day. This co- op will allow me to work with my favorite patient population while also gaining important nursing skills that I will use in my future career. At the end of July, I will be traveling to Quito, Ecuador with a group of UC nursing students where we will do our community clinical. We will be able to travel to communities outside of Quito and provide nursing care in the clinics that Timmy Global Health puts on every few months. I have never been out of the country, so I am excited to travel to Ecuador this summer.
Smiling Face: As I look back on this year, I was faced with so much uncertainty in the beginning. However, as the year ends I feel as though everything is falling into place. First, I found that pediatric nursing is my true love, more specifically patients with cancer and blood diseases. Second, I am getting the opportunity to travel outside of the United States for my community clinical which has always been a dream of mine. Third, I was placed on a great unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for co- op that I could potentially want to work on when I graduate. One of the main reasons I chose to go to UC for nursing was because of the co- op program, and now I am finally doing it. Fourth, but definitely not last, I am truly happy with where my life is right now, and I know that all my hard work of studying and trying my best is now playing off.
Finish Line: I can’t wait to see where senior year takes me. I am both ready to graduate and start my future job that I know I am going to love, and I am sad to leave UC because it’s been a great 3 years so far. I can’t wait to make the last year the best one yet!
