Exploring Leadership
This is a reflection about the honors seminar that I took during the 2015 fall semester called Exploring Leadership. I have also included my blog that I wrote prompts for during the duration of the class; there are seven blogs total.
During the 2015 fall semester, I took the honors seminar called Exploring Leadership taught by Erin Alanson, an advisor for the University of Cincinnati’s Honors Program. Throughout the class, we discussed all types of aspects of leadership. We were able to explore this complex topic through one book (Exploring Leadership: for College Students Who Want to Make a Difference), supplemental readings from various books and articles, TED talks, and guest speakers. I decided to take this class because one my friends took it in the 2015 spring semester, and she said she gained a lot of knowledge in the class while also having fun. Leadership is such a complex topic, that we had so much to discuss in such a small time frame of one semester. However, throughout these many topics, I was able to explore my current style of leadership and reflect on ways to help improve myself as a leader. At the beginning of the semester, we read a lot from the book and supplemental readings to discuss leadership. Then, we all became more and more comfortable with each other and the topic of leadership, so our professor brought in a couple of guest speakers. These guest speakers helped us interpret our own strengths, helped us work together as groups, and helped us connect with the people we could potentially be leading. One of the last projects in class was called Leadership in Action; this project had us get into groups and complete a service project within the community. This was by far my favorite project of the entire class because we were able to put our leadership skills into action by helping others. On the last day of class, each group presented their projects and shared what they did with the class. We also completed a reflective paper where we talked about what we learned throughout the semester and came up with a metaphor for how we see leadership.
