Ecuador International Community Clinical Trip
This is a reflection on my international community clinical trip to Quito, Ecuador with the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing.
From July 22nd through August 1st, I traveled with the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing to Quito, Ecuador for one of the international community clinical trips that the college offers every year. Instead of having a regular clinical (in a school, community health center, etc.) that accompanies the community nursing class that undergraduate BSN students must take, the college offers 3- 4 international trips a year that students can go on to help serve various medical needs in different parts of the world. This community trip was in the Quito, Ecuador, and we traveled to different villages during our time there and volunteered at the clinics that Timmy Global Health puts on every few months.
For May and June we met as a group to learn about the culture in Ecuador and attempted to learn some Spanish before we left for the trip. We also read The Queen of Water, which is a novel about a girl who lives in Ecuador. From this book, we were able to talk about and understand the Ecuadorian culture a little bit better before we left for our trip. Timmy Global Health also provides a variety of resources on their website that can help student volunteers learn more about the Ecuadorian culture and history. For example, I watched this video from Timmy Global Health.
At the end of June we had another meeting to divide, sort, and take inventory of all the medications we had to pack and bring with us. Each of us took about $200/ 20 pounds worth of vitamins, medications, and supplies that Timmy Global Health needed for the clinics. In order to pay for the medications we packed, we hosted a variety of fundraisers during the summer to raise over $3,400.
Ongoing Reflection
This is my ongoing reflection from my entire honors experience. I kept a daily journal while I was in Ecuador, and I added one of my favorite quotes that I thought fit the day well. This was a lot more fun for me than just reflecting on my day because now these quotes mean a lot more to me and help me remember how I felt each day.

Sharing my Experience with Others
I will be sharing my honors experience with the group of nursing students who will be going on the Ecuador International Clinical Trip next year. We present nursing information we learned as a part of our senior capstone project, but students who went the year before us shared projects they made individually. These projects really helped us learn more about the culture and things we could expect to see rather than just nursing information. For my sharing experience, I made a video I can show to the students going next year. The first video is pictures from the trip, and the second video is made with a Go Pro. We were not always able to take our phones with us because they could get lost or broken, but we were able to get Go Pro videos of everything we did.
